Three Resolutions for the Business Owner

Three Resolutions for the Business Owner

January is often the time of year when you look back on your successes and failures and look forward to growth and improvement in the coming months. When we do this in our personal life, we say that we’re making New Year’s Resolutions.

More often than not, however, we do not do the same for the businesses we manage or own. We get so caught up in the day-to-day tasks that keep our business going that we forget to sit back and think about resolutions for our business or for ourselves as business owners/managers.

Resolutions for our businesses is a topic for another day. Resolutions for ourselves as business managers is the focus of this blog. I’m fairly confident that taking care of yourself is the last thing on your mind even though it should be at the top of the list! Let me suggest 3 things that you should consider adding to your list of New Year’s Resolutions.

1.) Take care of yourself.

Make the time to exercise. Get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Eat regularly and healthily. These are all common-sense suggestions that I’m the first to ignore. However, I know from personal experience that, when I follow these simple recommendations, I’m more focused. I’m less stressed and better able to do more in the hours I work.

2.) Disconnect regularly.

Set time limits and stick to them. Turn your gadgets off, even if it’s just for an hour to share a meal with family. Take a vacation and enjoy it. Get away and disconnect. Provide your mind and body with the chance to decompress, de-stress and mentally recharge. In other words, get away and disconnect in order to be fully engaged at work.

3.) Be purposefully compassionate.

Compassion and empathy allow you to better grasp the concerns of employees, business partners and clients. It may seem counter intuitive. We learn early that cut-throat business practices lead to success. However, that is often not the case. Practicing compassion and empathy will help you grow relationships in ways that will enable you to grow your business.

I understand the absolute imperative that your business succeed. You have people that depend on you. In addition, you want to make a living doing what you enjoy. Having said that, it’s important to remember that life is short. In other words, a work-life balance that allows you to be present and engaged at work and at leisure is the key to making the most of both.
